List of Works For Large Ensemble
Montreal-based Christine Jensen is regarded as one of Canada’s most compelling composers. A native of British Columbia, Jensen is an original voice on the international jazz scene, currently leading her own jazz orchestra in addition to several other diverse ensemble projects.
A prolific composer and busy performer, she has released three small group recordings as a leader, Collage (2000), A Shorter Distance (2002), and Look Left (2006), two more with Nordic Connect (a project that she co-leads with her sister Ingrid), Flurry (2007), and Spirals (2011), two Juno Award-winning large ensemble recordings, Treelines – The Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra (2011), and Habitat (2014), and most recently, a new album of works for quintet entitled Infinitude (2017), featuring Ingrid and Ben Monder.
Jensen’s music has taken her all over the world, both through her work as a touring performer and a clinician, and in the form of numerous commissions and guest conducting opportunites with jazz orchestras in North America and Europe. In Canada, in addition to teaching saxophone and composition she divides her conducting time between The Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra, l’Orchestre National de Jazz de Montréal and McGill University’s Jazz Orchestra 1.

This pretty and colourful instrumental solo piece for alto saxophone and piano is a suite in four movements:
While the composition is infused with lush jazz harmony throughout, no improvisation is required. It would be a wonderful piece to play on a classical saxophone recital programme. Each of the four movements could be performed separately as well.

Nishiyuu is a beautiful extended work that showcases the 1st Tenor as the featured soloist throughout. Exactly as recorded by the Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra on the Juno award-winning album “Habitat” (2013), featuring Chet Doxas. There is plenty here to challenge the band musically and creatively, but the brass ranges and technical demands are fairly reasonable throughout. This chart would make a wonderful long-form feature for a soloist on a concert program.

The rich harmony and rhythmic interplay of the writing makes this one beautiful and exciting from start to finish. 1st Alto doubles on Soprano, 2nd Alto on Flute, and 2nd Tenor on Clarinet.

Treelines is a longer-form chart that moves through a variety of moods, styles and tempos. Beginning with a slow, intense introduction of sparse intervals that builds into dense harmonic structures, a lively tune quickly emerges, played by the lead trombone and 2nd tenor. As the chart progresses, the rhythm and character continues to evolve, all the way into free improvisation from the two soloists. The tune returns, this time in 3/4, and the band plays an inventive re-working of the melody as they head out to the end. An exciting and creative chart, all the way through.
